What is the JEE Main 2026 Exam?

JEE Main 2026 exam is conducted for admission to IITs, NITs, CFTIs, and colleges/universities funded by the central or state Government. Students should also note that the JEE Main exam is an eligibility requirement for the JEE Advanced exam – the next step in the admission process.

The competition for admission to the above universities is intense with lakhs of candidates appearing for the exam every year but only a few thousand make it to the university.

Candidates must have completed their Class 12th in 2024 or 2025, or be appearing in 2026, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects, to be eligible to take the JEE Main 2026 exam. Students can take the exam for 3 consecutive years from the year of passing class 12, although there is no minimum grade requirement or age restriction.

JEE Main 2026 Registration Mandates Aadhaar/Digilocker

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has introduced new verification standards for the JEE Main 2026 registration process. Candidates must now verify their identity using Aadhaar or DigiLocker. This will help reduce application errors and verify the candidate's information.

According to the revised requirements, students applying for JEE Main 2026 must verify their identity during the identity details stage using their Aadhaar number or DigiLocker account. According to the information pamphlet, those who choose not to use Aadhaar must upload a scanned copy of a valid form of identity, such as a passport, PAN card, or voter ID.

However, this option is not currently available for JEE Mains registration. The only documents accepted by the system are Digilocker and Aadhaar.

By linking Aadhaar or DigiLocker, candidate details like name, birthdate, and photo can be instantly validated. It also reduces errors in the processing of admission cards and results that sometimes lead to application denials or inconsistencies.

Students are also encouraged to update their Aadhaar details, which include their name, address, gender, and most recent photo, before applying. By allowing candidates to download verified documents, like their birth certificate or Class 10 mark sheet, DigiLocker removes the need for manual uploads.

No Correction Facility for ID Details

The NTA has made it quite clear that there won't be a window for Aadhaar or identifying data to be altered once the application is submitted. Students are therefore required to confirm all of their personal information before turning in their final application.

Crucial Lessons for Applicants:

  • Aadhaar or DigiLocker authentication is now required for JEE Main 2026 registration.
  • Aadhaar and DigiLocker will be used to verify the information.
  • Applicants should ensure that their Aadhaar photo and details are current and accurate.

Latest Updates for JEE Main 2026

  • The JEE Main 2026 Notification was made available for public review on October 31, 2025.
  • The JEE Main 2026 exam dates for sessions 1 and 2 are scheduled for January 21–30, 2026, and April 2–April 9, 2026, respectively. Candidates who wish to apply for the exam can register at jeemain.nta.ac.in. The JEE Main date sheet is likely to be released in the second week of January alongside the city intimation slip.
  • The online JEE Main 2026 registration period for Session 1 was opened on October 31, 2025.
  • Students can register online for the JEE Main 2026 Session 1 exam by November 27, 2025, till 11:50 PM.
  • The deadline for completing the required application fee payment is 27 November 2025, by 11:50 PM.
  • The online JEE Main 2026 registration period for Session 2 will open on January 31, 2026, and run through early March 2026.
  • It is anticipated that registered candidates' JEE Main 2026 Admit Card will be made available in the third week of January 2026 for session 1, and just three days before the exam for session 2.
  • JEE Main 2026 Results for the first and second sessions are anticipated to be released on February 12, 2026, and April 20, 2026, respectively.
  • The tentative release dates for the City Intimation Slip are the first week of January 2026 for Session 1 and the third week of March 2026 for Session 2.
  • IIT Roorkee is expected to conduct the first and second sessions of the JEE Main 2026 exam.
  • Instead of 10 NVT questions for each topic (math, chemistry, and physics) out of which applicants can choose any 5 to answer, JEE Main 2026 paper 1 now has only 5 mandatory questions.
  • Negative marking was introduced in numerical-based questions last year. There will be a deduction of one mark for the wrong answer.
  • There are 75 questions in the JEE Main 2026 exam, with a total score of 300. There are 25 questions in each of the three sections of mathematics, chemistry, and physics.
  • Each part contains five numerical questions and twenty multiple-choice questions.
  • No significant changes were made to the JEE Main 2026 syllabus and JEE Main 2026 exam pattern.
  • For JEE Main 2026 registration, Aadhar/Digilocker verification is made mandatory for all applicants. Personal details for registration will be automatically picked up by the official website after you verify your Aadhaar/Digilocker details. This is done to mitigate the risk of errors while filling out the application form.
  • NTA has said unequivocally that calculators will not be permitted in the exam room this year. In order to improve their speed and accuracy without using any digital aids, test-takers must practice manual calculation.
  • For the JEE Main 2026 exam, candidates are only allowed to select their preferred state; they are not allowed to select their preferred city.

Tie-Breaking Rules in JEE Main 2025 Exam

  • The agency has also changed the tie-breaking policy for JEE Mains. Now the tie-breaking will be done based on marks obtained in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Earlier, tie-breaking was done on the basis of age and number of applications.

How Many People Sign Up for JEE Mains?

The number of applicants can be anywhere from 1 million to 1.3 million. Last year, the total number of applicants was 13.11 Lakh for session 1 and 10.61 Lakh for session 2. The total number of applicants who took the exam in the previous years is shown in the table below.
